Iceland: Interest Increases for Söngvakeppnin 2020

Icelandic broadcaster RÚV have revealed that a total of 157 songs have been submitted to the broadcaster for Söngvakeppnin 2020.

According to the broadcaster, the number of submissions is up 20% on last year. Now that the songs are submitted, a seven-member jury will review all the songs. The jury will consist of representatives from the broadcaster, the Association of Icelandic Musicians and the Association of Composers and Writers. All the songs will be reviewed anonymously, meaning that the jury will not know the artist or composer of the song.

A total of 10 entries will be competing in the selection, and they will be revealed in January. The two semi-finals of the selection will take place on February 8th and 15th where two songs will qualify from each semi-final. The broadcaster also has the right to choose one of the non-qualifying entries as a wildcard for the final, meaning the final will likely feature five artists.

Like in previous years, the songs will be performed in Icelandic in the semi-finals, and then in the final the artist can choose to perform in either Icelandic or English depending on their intentions if they were to represent Iceland at Eurovision.
